Scotia, driving a Toyota Camry, was traveling north on Hayes Avenue and approaching a stop sign at the intersection.
At the same time, a 39-year-old man from Bakersfield was driving a 2013 Peterbilt truck on State Route 180, hauling a full load of pistachios.
For reasons still under investigation, the woman entered the intersection directly into the path of the truck, authorities said.

The truck driver, unable to avoid the collision, struck the left side of the Toyota in the eastbound lane, causing both vehicles to veer off the road and onto the north shoulder. The impact caused the truck’s load of pistachios to spill across the roadway.
The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead. The driver of the Peterbilt was not injured and cooperated with authorities.
