A report of an armed person at Washington Academic Middle School prompted a police response Tuesday afternoon, but authorities found no threat and believe the report was a hoax, the Sanger Police Department said.

Police received a telephone report shortly after 3 p.m. claiming an armed person was on the school campus.

A school resource officer was already at the school, while additional officers arrived within minutes, police said.

Police worked with Sanger Unified School District staff to secure the campus and ensure the safety of students and employees.

Officers conducted a thorough search and assessment of the campus but did not locate a threat, police said.

The campus and surrounding streets were reopened after a brief delay, allowing students to be released safely.

Police said the original report is believed to have been a hoax. Investigators are working to determine the source of the report.
