Fresno Chaffee Zoo has named its first Malayan tapir calf Winston after thousands of community members voted to select the name.
The six-week-old male calf was born July 11 to female Ulan and male William. His birth marked a milestone for the zoo as its first Malayan tapir calf.
The zoo asked the community to choose among three names: Ube, Winston, and Winchester. More than 4,000 votes were cast, with Winston coming out on top.

Winston and his mother will continue bonding behind the scenes before making their public debut in the zoo’s Kingdoms of Asia habitat.
The zoo said it will announce on social media when the pair is ready to enter the habitat. Updates on Ulan and Winston will also be shared on the zoo’s social media accounts.
Virtual adoptions are available through the zoo’s website for people who want to support the zoo’s new animals.
