State Auditor Wants Stricter Oversight of How School Districts Spend COVID Aid

The state auditor criticized the California Department of Education for inadequately monitoring $24 billion in federal COVID-19 relief that is going to school districts and charter schools in a report issued Tuesday.

State Auditor Elaine Howle noted that local school districts could wind up returning as much as $160 million in pandemic funding to the federal government at the current rate of spending.

Howle also criticized the state Department of Education for providing inadequate oversight over how school districts use the one-time federal funds.
