Sen. Chris Van Hollen, a Maryland Democrat, called on U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee to resign, accusing him of failing to protect U.S. interests and becoming a “mouthpiece” for the Israeli government.

“The job of an American ambassador is to defend and protect the interests of the United States of America,” Van Hollen said in a video posted Aug. 10. “Ambassador Huckabee has failed to do that.”

Van Hollen also called for Huckabee’s resignation in a statement posted online.

Van Hollen said Huckabee has failed in that responsibility as violence continues in the West Bank and extremists call for a “Greater Israel.”

“He’s become a mouthpiece for the Israeli govt.,” Van Hollen wrote. “He should resign.”
