Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir publicly advocated for killing “30 to 40” people in Gaza each night, criticizing Israel’s recent reduction in strikes on the territory, the Associated Press report.
Speaking on former hostage Rom Braslavski’s podcast, the far-right lawmaker said some Palestinians were “not worthy of life” and called for targeted killings beyond those posing an immediate threat.
Ben-Gvir, a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, does not control Israel’s military but oversees the national police and prison system. Similar statements by Israeli officials have been cited as evidence of genocidal intent at the U.N.’s world court. Israel denies committing genocide.
Ben-Gvir also advocated for Israeli settlements throughout Gaza and mass Palestinian emigration. His remarks come as Israel approaches Oct. 27 elections and amid disagreements over a Gaza truce. Netanyahu has said Israeli forces will maintain their positions until Hamas is completely disarmed.
