Authorities have identified a 53-year-old Parlier man as the suspect who was critically injured in an officer-involved shooting Saturday following a pursuit that ended at Parlier High School, the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said.
Jose Garcia remains hospitalized in critical condition and has been electronically booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of attempted murder, assault on an officer, evading police, and resisting arrest, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began about 10:10 a.m. Saturday when a Parlier police officer requested backup after his patrol car was struck by gunfire near Merced and H streets.
Fresno County sheriff’s deputies arrived minutes later and began searching for the vehicle believed to be involved. A sheriff’s deputy and a Selma police officer spotted Garcia in a pickup truck, prompting a pursuit, authorities said.
The pursuit ended shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Fig Avenue near Third and Fourth streets when Garcia crashed into a fence at Parlier High School, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
A sheriff’s deputy and a Selma police officer then fired at Garcia, striking him multiple times. Garcia received medical aid at the scene before being taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.
Authorities said a firearm in Garcia’s possession was recovered near his vehicle.
Four law enforcement officers were involved in the shooting: two Parlier police officers, one Selma police officer, and one Fresno County sheriff’s deputy. No officers were shot. A
Selma police officer suffered an arm injury, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
