The Fresno Police Department will increase patrols and conduct two DUI checkpoints as part of a national campaign aimed at preventing impaired driving through the end of summer.

Additional officers will be on patrol starting Wednesday through Labor Day, Sept. 7, looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the department said. The enforcement is part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Police also plan DUI checkpoints Aug. 22 and Aug. 29 from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. at undisclosed locations in Fresno.

The department is urging drivers to plan ahead for Labor Day festivities by arranging for a sober driver, using a ride-sharing service, taking a taxi or using public transportation if they plan to drink.

Impaired driving can involve more than alcohol, police said. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and cannabis products can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely. People taking medications with warnings about driving should have a sober person drive.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 11,904 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes nationwide in 2024, or about one person every 44 minutes.

Police also encouraged motorists to wear seat belts, avoid distractions, follow speed limits, and watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. Drivers traveling long distances should take regular breaks to avoid fatigue.

Anyone who sees a driver who appears to be impaired should call 911, police said.

Funding for the enforcement program is provided by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
