A driver was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash in eastern Fresno County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified the man killed as Alex Lopez, 28, of Kingsburg.

The crash was reported about 7:30 a.m. on Academy Avenue north of Dinuba Avenue, CHP said.

Investigators said a Toyota Corolla was traveling north on Academy Avenue when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver allowed the vehicle’s right tires to drift onto the dirt shoulder.

The driver then overcorrected to the left, causing the Corolla to cross the roadway into the path of a southbound GMC Denali.

The right front of the GMC struck the right side of the Toyota, CHP said. Both vehicles came to rest on the west dirt shoulder.

The driver of the Toyota, who was wearing a seat belt, was found unresponsive and suffered major injuries. Emergency crews performed CPR at the scene before the driver was taken to Adventist Health Selma, where the driver died.

The driver of the GMC suffered minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital, CHP said. A juvenile passenger who had been riding in the GMC was transported from the scene before CHP officers arrived.

Authorities said it remains unknown whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.
