Fresno County sheriff’s deputies seized 22 pounds of fentanyl in two separate Interstate 5 traffic stops over the past month, authorities said Thursday.

In the most recent case, a deputy working patrol on Wednesday stopped a vehicle for a violation on Interstate 5 east of Coalinga, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies contacted two men inside the vehicle and discovered 15.4 pounds of fentanyl during a search of the car, the sheriff’s office said. Both men were arrested and booked into jail on charges related to narcotics possession and possession with intent to sell narcotics.

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing and the suspects’ names were not immediately released.

The seizure follows a similar case on April 11, when a deputy stopped a vehicle traveling on Interstate 5. K-9 Willow alerted deputies to the odor of narcotics, and investigators found 6.6 pounds of fentanyl inside the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Two men were arrested in that case and booked into jail on charges related to narcotics possession and intent to sell narcotics. Authorities said that investigation also remains ongoing and the suspects’ names have not been released.
