Meet Tulare County's New Health Officer: Dr. Asma Tariq

Dr. Asma Tariq is Tulare County’s the new health officer after her unanimous appointment by the board of supervisors.

Dr. Tariq will assume duties on May 4. She is filling a long-standing vacancy created by Dr. Karen Haught ‘s 2023 retirement.

As county health officer, Dr. Tariq will oversee public health initiatives and advocate for education, prevention, and health promotion.

Dr. Tariq is described a lifelong leaner, ready to expand her knowledge and work. She plans to diligently engage in public health programs that foster the community’s overall health and well-being.

She will work to identify the needs of Tulare County residences and collaborate with internal and external partners to meet objectives.

Her main goals are improving health outcomes and advancing equity in health.

“Dr. Tariq recognizes the diverse needs of our underserved population. She has provided clinical services to our county residents for 12 years and understands the importance of preventative care and health education,” said Tulare County Public Health Director Karen Elliott. “I look forward to her joining the team and the commitment she brings to improve the well-being of our community.”

Learn More About Dr. Tariq

Dr. Tariq is a practicing family medicine physician, providing care in outpatient and hospital settings.

Additionally, she serves as a core faculty member of the Kaweah Health Family Medicine Residency Program and a volunteer faculty member at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Tariq graduated from Aga Khan University in Pakistan with a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery.

She is board-certified through the American Board of Family Medicine and completed her Family Medicine Residency at Kaweah Health.
