Oracle Park is set to host Major League Baseball’s official season opener between two of the game’s most historic franchises, the New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants.

MLB Season Opener

Yankees at Giants, 5 p.m., PDT

How to Watch: Netflix

How to Listen: KFIG/KFPT 1430 AM

But as fans know, it’s a new world order for sports viewing as streaming disrupts the marketplace, just as cable did decades ago.

Thus Netflix alone will present the game, leaving millions of Giants and Yankees fans scrambling for a radio.

The streaming service is pulling out all the stops to make the game an entertainment event while also building its brand. For example, Barry Bonds, the Giants legend and all-time MLB home run king, will be part of the broadcast. Based on the game’s advance promotion, expect Netflix to feature McCovey Cove throughout its coverage.

Judge Returns to the Bay Area

For Giants fans, the game will be another painful reminder of the 2013 MLB draft.

The Giants, who had the 25th overall pick, selected Christian Arroyo, a Florida high school shortstop. Seven picks later, the Yankees took Fresno State’s Aaron Judge.

Arroyo last played in the big leagues in 2023 and has a career WAR of 2.1 Judge blossomed into a seven-time All-Star, three-time AL MVP, and the premiere power hitter of his generation with a career WAR of 62.3.

The Giants presumably scouted Judge, who grew up less than 100 miles from Oracle Park, dozens of times but passed on him. Years later, he passed on the Giants, rejecting their lucrative free-agent offer to remain a Yankee.

Oh well, that’s all water under the Golden Gate Bridge now.

Starting Lineups

The Giants opening day starter for the fifth straight season is ace righthander Logan Webb (15-11, 3.22 ERA in 34 starts). The Yankees will counter with star lefthander Max Fried (19-5, 2.86 ERA in 32 starts).

The Robot Umpire

This will be the first MLB regular-season game using the Automated Ball-Strike Challenge System that fans have taken to calling the “robot ump.”

Only the pitcher, catcher, or batter can challenge a ball or strike call, and they have to do so immediately by tapping their head. Teams begin every game with two available challenges.

Other Netflix MLB Coverage in 2026

MLB announced in November that it had agreed to a three-year, $50 million per season contract with Netflix through the end of the 2028 season.

Netflix will also stream the T-Mobile Home Run Derby in Philadelphia on July 13 and the MLB Field of Dreams Game between the Phillies and Twins in Dyersville, Iowa, on Aug. 13.
