A bicyclist was arrested Thursday on suspicion of riding under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop in Winton, according to the California Highway Patrol Merced Area office.
Officers said the stop began when they observed a bicyclist riding while holding an open tall can of beer. The encounter led to a DUI investigation, and the rider was arrested on suspicion of riding a bicycle under the influence.
Officials said the officers later returned the bicycle to the rider’s residence.
Authorities noted that DUI laws apply not only to motor vehicles, but also to bicycles, and said alcohol can impair balance, judgment and reaction time, creating a danger to the rider and others.
