A firework that ignited an exterior fire led to a house fire Sunday afternoon in Fresno, displacing nine people and sending two occupants to the hospital for smoke inhalation, according to the Fresno Fire Department.

Firefighters responded shortly after 3:30 p.m. to the 3500 block of East Home Avenue after receiving reports of a house fire. Crews arriving at the scene reported smoke coming from the residence, with the fire extending into the attic.

Firefighters launched an aggressive attack while also working to protect and salvage the occupants’ belongings from further damage, the department said. Due to the high temperatures and the amount of work required, additional resources were requested, bringing a total of 31 firefighters to the scene.

The fire was determined to have started when a firework ignited an exterior fire that spread into the home, causing significant damage.

Nine residents, including adults and children, were displaced following the fire. Two occupants were taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
