Firefighters responded Sunday morning to a grass fire on an island in the San Joaquin River near Millburn Avenue, an operation that required boats, hand tools and a multi-agency response, according to the Fresno Fire Department.
Around 9:30 a.m., the Fresno Fire Department dispatched crews to the fire, later requesting its Water Rescue Team to ferry firefighters and equipment across the San Joaquin River due to the location of the flames. A CalFire hand crew also assisted with suppression efforts.
While being transported to the island, firefighters observed a doe and her fawn swimming away from the fire. The doe reached shore safely, but the fawn began struggling in the water. Crews rescued the young deer and reunited it with its mother before continuing fire suppression operations.
Firefighters remained on scene until about 4:30 p.m., extinguishing hotspots and ensuring full containment. The response lasted nearly seven hours and included coordination between the Fresno Police Department and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, along with CalFire.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
