A Madera man who shot two people in the Fresno River has agreed to a plea deal with a nine-year prison term and will be sentenced May 11.

According to the Madera County District Attorney’s Office, Salomon Barragon Velez shot one person in the foot and one in the leg on Feb. 13. Both wounds were non-life threatening.

Must Serve at Least 85% of Sentence

Before his preliminary hearing,  Barragon Velez accepted the district attorney’s plea-bargain offer and agreed to a nine-year sentence.

In addition, the defendant admitted to two “strike” offenses under the state’s “Three Strikes” law. Because he admitted to violent crimes, Barragon Velez is required to serve at least 85% of his sentence, the district attorney’s office said.

In a news release, Madera County District Attorney Salley Moreno said that her office continues “to prosecute cases and appear in court when necessary
while at the same time adapting to the ever-changing world during this unprecedented pandemic.”
