A 31-year-old Chowchilla woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Sunday after authorities said she attempted to enter Highway 99 in the wrong direction, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP Madera officers responded shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday to reports of a vehicle attempting to enter northbound State Route 99 in the wrong direction from the Avenue 20 1/2 off-ramp.

Before the vehicle reached the main portion of the freeway, the driver veered off the road and became high-centered on the shoulder, CHP said.

Officers contacted the driver and conducted a DUI investigation. CHP said the woman was determined to have an alcohol level three times the legal limit.

The unnamed suspect was arrested and booked into the Madera County Jail.
