A fire that began in a trash can spread to a vacant, boarded-up two-story home in Fresno on Monday afternoon, causing extensive damage and prompting a response from 47 firefighters, authorities said.
Fresno firefighters responded shortly before 12:45 p.m. to the 2300 block of East Grant Avenue after receiving multiple reports of a house fire, according to the Fresno Fire Department.
The first crew arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the second story and attic of the home.
Initial reports indicated people had been seen entering and exiting the property before firefighters arrived, raising concerns that someone could still be inside.
Firefighters requested a second alarm because of the potential need for a rescue, bringing a total of 47 firefighters to the scene.
Crews searched the home while other firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the flames. No one was found inside.
Despite firefighters’ efforts, the blaze caused extensive damage to the structure. No injuries were reported.
Fire investigators determined the blaze originated in a trash can before spreading to the house, officials said.
