California regulators have approved new energy-efficiency standards that will eventually limit which replacement tires can be sold in the state, according to GV Wire’s news partner KMPH.

The California Energy Commission unanimously approved regulations Monday requiring replacement tires to meet new efficiency standards aimed at reducing fuel and electricity use and pollution. The first phase takes effect in 2029, with stricter requirements beginning in 2033.

The rules target rolling resistance, or the energy needed to keep a tire moving. Regulators say more-efficient tires could help drivers avoid losing vehicle efficiency when replacing original tires.

The standards apply only to replacement tires offered for sale, not tires installed on new vehicles, and consumers will not be required to replace existing tires.

Some tire retailers have raised concerns about reduced consumer choice and potentially higher prices. State officials say any additional upfront costs should be offset by fuel or electricity savings over the tires’ lifespan.
