The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols on Saturday as officers look for drivers suspected of operating vehicles under the influence.
The patrols are scheduled from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., according to the department.
Police reminded drivers that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also affect a person’s ability to drive, and motorists are encouraged to follow usage directions and warning labels.
The department also noted that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
Drivers convicted of a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
Funding for the DUI patrols was provided through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
