Visalia police issued 22 citations for hands-free cell phone violations during a distracted driving enforcement operation on Thursday.

California law has prohibited handheld cellphone use while driving since 2008. Under current law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or other electronic device while driving, including while talking, texting, or using apps.

Police said using a handheld cellphone while driving is punishable by a fine. A second violation within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense will result in a point being added to a driver’s record.

The department reminded motorists to pull over to a safe parking location if they need to make an important phone call or program directions. Drivers are also encouraged to silence their phones or place them out of reach before driving.

The enforcement operation was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
