The Madera Police Department will conduct a pedestrian safety and bicycle enforcement operation Wednesday focused on dangerous driving behaviors that put people walking and biking at risk, officials announced.

Officers will target violations including speeding, distracted driving and failure to yield to pedestrians, along with right-of-way violations. The operation will also include enforcement involving bicyclists and e-bike riders.

Under California law, drivers are required to yield to pedestrians, and bicyclists and e-bike riders must follow many of the same rules of the road as motor vehicles.

Police urged pedestrians to use crosswalks when available, remain visible to drivers, and avoid stepping into traffic. Officials also reminded drivers to slow down at intersections, watch for pedestrians at marked and unmarked crosswalks, avoid blocking crosswalks and never drive impaired.

Bicyclists and e-bike riders were advised to obey all traffic laws and increase visibility, especially at dawn, dusk and nighttime.

Funding for the enforcement effort is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
