A man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after riding a horse on a public roadway, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Hanford office.

The agency reminded the public that under California law, anyone riding or driving an animal on a public roadway has the same rights and responsibilities as the driver of a motor vehicle.

That means a person can be arrested and prosecuted for riding a horse while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, CHP said.

The agency noted that DUI laws can also apply to people operating cars, boats, and bicycles.
