A 20-year-old Santa Maria man died after he was pulled from the water at Lopez Lake on Tuesday, according to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the lake after receiving a report of a swimmer in distress. Witnesses told authorities that a man was swimming with friends when he appeared to be in distress and went underwater.

A nearby boat was flagged down, and its occupants located him and pulled him from the water. CPR was immediately started at the scene.

He was transported to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Nathan Martinez, 20, of Santa Maria. Authorities said his next of kin have been notified.
