Five people were arrested for driving under the influence during an overnight checkpoint Saturday at Maple Avenue and Cesar Chavez Boulevard, the Fresno Police Department said Monday.

The checkpoint operated from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., during which authorities contacted 285 vehicles. In addition to the five DUI arrests, 26 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended or revoked license, police said.

DUI checkpoint locations are selected based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of the checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the roads.

The next DUI enforcement operation, a DUI saturation patrol, is scheduled for March 14, police said.

Funding for Saturday’s checkpoint was provided by a grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
