A fire damaged five apartment units and displaced multiple residents Tuesday morning at a Fresno apartment complex, fire officials said.

The fire was reported just before 11 a.m. in the 1500 block of West Ashlan Avenue near West Avenue.

The first firefighters to arrive found heavy smoke and flames coming from multiple units in a two-story apartment building.

Crews confirmed all residents had safely evacuated before launching an aggressive attack that stopped the fire from spreading further, according to the Fresno Fire Department.

Because of the high temperatures and the size of the fire, additional resources were called in, bringing a total of 42 fire personnel to the scene.

Five apartment units were damaged, displacing multiple residents.

Firefighters also rescued several pets, including multiple dogs and cats. One cat died in the fire, officials said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
