Fresno police released body-worn camera footage and other material Friday showing an officer-involved shooting in September that left a 42-year-old man wounded and facing multiple charges.
Officers responded about 2:45 a.m. Sept. 1 to a ShotSpotter activation reporting a single gunshot near the 300 block of South Orchard Street, according to the Fresno Police Department’s critical incident video.
Two officers arriving in the area saw David Rascon, 42, standing on the sidewalk along the East Huntington Avenue overpass above Highway 41, police said.
As officers made a U-turn to contact Rascon, he ran westbound on East Huntington Avenue while holding a firearm, according to police.
Police said Rascon ran into a condominium complex and fired multiple rounds at officers pursuing him.
A third officer arrived and pursued Rascon on foot. In a post-incident statement included in the video, another officer said he heard a gunshot as he got out of his patrol vehicle and took cover.

That officer said he then saw Rascon point a firearm at the third officer and fire multiple times. Two officers then fired their department-issued handguns, police said.
Rascon was struck multiple times by officer gunfire.
Officers provided medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Rascon was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment of gunshot injuries.
No officers or community members were injured in the incident, police said.
Police said they recovered a loaded privately made firearm belonging to Rascon. The gun had one spent casing in the chamber, and investigators found two additional spent casings from Rascon’s handgun in the immediate area.

Rascon has been charged with three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer, three counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer with use of a firearm, multiple unlawful firearm possession charges, and a parole violation, according to police.
The Police Department said the investigation remains ongoing.
Findings from the investigation will be turned over to the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office, the department’s Internal Affairs unit, and the Office of Independent Review.
