A 15-year-old Tranquility High School student was identified as the driver who died after a vehicle was discovered submerged in a canal near James Road and Lincoln Avenue in Fresno County, authorities said.
The Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office identified the teen as Luis Hernandez of Tranquility on Monday.
The California Highway Patrol Fresno Communications Center received a report of a possible traffic collision at about 6:43 a.m. Saturday after a passerby spotted the wheels of a vehicle submerged in a canal on James Road, south of Lincoln Avenue.
A CHP officer responded and confirmed a vehicle was underwater. With assistance from a Fresno County Fire boat rescue team, authorities recovered a white 2016 Toyota Corolla from the canal.
Despite rescue efforts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel, authorities reported.
Investigators said the Toyota was traveling on James Road toward Lincoln Avenue when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver failed to negotiate a left curve and continued straight into the canal. Authorities have not determined when the crash occurred.
