GV Wire reporter Anya Ellis talks with KMPH Fox 26 “Great Day” anchor Karl Cooke about Fresno Unified’s Superintendent Misty Her’s “hands on” approach to learning.

The superintendent worked closely with classroom teacher Ana Bustos at Mayfair Elementary to dramatically improve literacy.

At the beginning of the school year, more than half of the students couldn’t read. Now, 84% of the class can read at grade level.

Fresno Unified has zeroed in on literacy, because reading is essential in all subjects, including math and science.

The challenge now for Fresno Unified leadership to scale the methods used by Her and Bustos throughout the district.
