A known gang member was arrested after allegedly fleeing from officers and tossing a firearm over a fence in southeast Fresno, the Fresno Police Department said in a Thursday statement.

Officers approached three men loitering near Bond Street and Belmont Avenue, including one man identified as a known gang member, officials said.

As officers approached, the man ran away while clutching his waistband, police said. Officers chased him and saw him throw a gun over a fence.

He was detained and the firearm was recovered.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was booked into the Fresno County Jail on multiple charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm and obstructing an officer.

Another man at the scene was arrested for violating probation, police said.
