Big Second-Half Explosion
The trio of Aly Gamez, Maddi Utti and Hanna Cavinder combined for 32 second-half points to power a victory that stunned the Lobos (12-12, 3-8) and a home crowd of more than 5,000 fans.
The energetic Gamez seemingly overpowered New Mexico in the fourth quarter with eight points and four rebounds. She finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, duplicating her Wednesday effort against Air Force.
Haley Cavinder not only broke her school single-game freshman scoring record but also had five steal and six assists.
How the Bulldogs Won It
New Mexico led, 74-70, with 6 minutes, 18 seconds remaining, but Gamez punctuated her own steal with a 3-pointer off a pass from Haley Cavinder. Later, following a media timeout, Haley Cavinder knocked down a pair of mid-range jump shots and the Bulldogs were rolling.
But the Lobos remained resilient and got their lead back to four points with 1:48 left. Haley Cavinder and Gamez answered with 3-pointers, and Gamez iced the victory at the free-throw line.
Utti recorded her eighth double-double this season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She also had five assists. Hanna Cavinder finished with 13 points.
Jaedyn De La Cerda scored 18 points and Jordan Hosey contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Lobos.
