After 38 years serving in the Clovis Unified School District, Superintendent Janet Young is retiring. At a news conference at district headquarters, Young says she is stepping down when her contract runs out on June 30. She looks forward to spending time with her family.
Young started her Clovis educational career in 1979 as a 1st grade teacher. She worked her way up the school ladder, all the way to the head of the district in 2011.
Board president Sandra Budd was also on hand to thank Young. “You’ve had a truly remarkable career. I thank you for all the hearts you have touched in this district. I wish you and your family the best,” Budd said as she hugged Young.
As to why now? Young said “I believe there is no perfect time. I believe this is the time when the district is thriving and strong and positive and more united than ever before. It is time for me to give this very special school district to another leader that can take the students in our community to higher levels of excellence. I am truly confident that the district will thrive in the years ahead.”
Young plans to spend time with family in her retirement and no longer work in education.
Budd said that a search for a new superintendent will begin as soon as possible and hope to bring that person aboard before Young finishes. They plan to keep the search within California.
