A 20-year-old man sought in the January shooting death of an 18-year-old in Merced has been taken into custody after investigators tracked him to Mexico, police said.
Merced police said officers responded about midnight Jan. 25 to reports of gunfire and a person down in the 1300 block of Stuart Drive.
Officers found 18-year-old Miguel Gaeta suffering from gunshot wounds. He died at the scene, police said.
Detectives investigating the killing identified Moises Reyes, 20, whom police described as a Norteño gang member, as the person responsible for the shooting.
Police said detectives searched for Reyes for several months before determining that he was in Mexico.
The department contacted the U.S. Marshals Service and Mexican law enforcement authorities, which assisted investigators in locating Reyes. Police said Reyes was ultimately found and taken into custody.
The department thanked the U.S. Marshals Service and Mexican authorities for their assistance in the investigation and apprehension.
