The Clovis Police Department has released more information about two suspects arrested in connection with the killing of 18-year-old Caleb Quick.

At a Saturday news conference, Clovis Police Chief Curt Fleming said both suspects are juveniles. The suspected shooter, a 16-year-old boy, has been charged with murder. The driver of the Tesla, a 16-year-old girl, was also charged with murder.

Both suspects are current students of Clovis Unified and both knew Quick, police said.

Because the suspects are minors, Fleming said he could not provide much additional information.

Police received more than 100 tips through Valley Crime Stoppers. However, none of the tips led to the suspect’s capture, so the reward will not be paid out.

Timeline of the April 23 Incident

Clovis police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire near Willow and Nees avenues around 8:57 p.m. April 23.

At 7:44 p.m., the suspected getaway car, a 2024 white Tesla Model 3, arrived at the McDonald’s, police said Saturday. The suspects stayed until about 8:12 p.m., when the Tesla left.

Police said Quick arrived at the McDonald’s at 8:22 p.m. followed by the shooting suspect, who was seen crossing the street toward the McDonald’s at 8:33 p.m.

Around 8:33 p.m., the white Tesla, driven by the female suspect, returned to the parking lot and parked a few rows away from the McDonald’s.

The shooting suspect entered the McDonald’s at 8:38 p.m. and sat at a table watching Quick before following him out of the restaurant, police said.

As Quick walked toward his car at around 8:56 p.m., the shooting suspect approached from behind and shot him, police said.

The shooting suspect left the scene heading west toward Fresno wearing all black and carrying a handgun, according to police. The gun was recovered during a search warrant, Fleming said on Saturday.

Police said that the suspect was picked up in a 2024 Tesla Model 3 about one minute after the shooting took place.

When officers arrived, they found Quick suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Clovis PD said video surveillance confirmed the suspect left the scene before police arrived and began their investigation.

On Tuesday, police reported that they seized a white Tesla that was possibly the getaway car.

Authorities have described the shooting as a targeted, pre-planned act of violence.

Statement From Superintendent Corrine Folmer To the Parents of Clovis Unified

Last night, Clovis Police Department announced the arrest of suspects in the April 23 McDonald’s parking lot shooting of Caleb Quick. The news that they are also students in our district is a tragedy now doubled. Our hearts go out to the families devastated by this horrible crime that has irreparably changed multiple families’ futures and whose repercussions have resonated throughout our community.

I felt it important that our community heard from me with reassurances of the steps we have taken to support our students and ensure the on-going security of our school campuses.

As a district, we work to put students at the center of every decision we make. In the days ahead, our team will be wholly focused on deploying our extensive mental health and emotional wellness support system in a way that meets the unique needs of students impacted by this crime in our community.

As a parent of a student in our district, I recognize the fear we can have for our own children when something like this happens in our community. Our schools remain well-protected and welcoming places for our students, and our team is here for your family. As an additional show of support and reassurance for our families, extra Clovis Unified police officers will also remain deployed at schools most directly impacted by this tragedy.

If your child is struggling, we want you to know that we’re here and ask that you get in contact with your child’s school and they will come alongside you with support.

I appreciate the efforts of Chief Curt Fleming and the City of Clovis Police Department as they worked around the clock on this investigation to find answers for our entire community. We continue to encourage anyone with new information about this case to please contact Clovis Police Department at 559-324-2800.

I have never been more grateful for the incredible community of Clovis Unified. Together we will work to support each other and heal.”
