A possible gas leak at a Modesto home turned into a hazardous materials investigation after firefighters discovered an old military-grade mortar and multiple household chemicals inside a backyard shed, authorities said.

The Modesto Fire Department said firefighters responded earlier this week to a home on Rexford Court after receiving reports of a possible gas leak outside the residence.

When Engine 7 arrived, firefighters noticed an unusual odor coming from a backyard shed and requested a hazardous materials response.

HazMat 41, fire command staff, Medic 1, and a hazardous materials inspector responded to investigate.

During the investigation, crews discovered multiple household chemicals and an old military-grade mortar inside the shed.

The Modesto Police Department and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad were called to assist.

Authorities secured the area while the bomb squad removed the potentially explosive mortar and hazardous materials personnel secured the chemicals.

The fire department did not provide additional details about the mortar or chemicals.
