A 15-year-old has been arrested on murder and gang-related charges in connection with a fatal shooting at Independence High School that killed 17-year-old Levi Brown, Bakersfield police said.

The shooting occurred Friday during a high school football game, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.

Investigators believe the shooting was a targeted act connected to gang activity and was not random, police said.

Brown has been identified as the minor who died in the shooting, according to KGET. Police did not release additional details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The department said the incident comes despite progress in reducing gang-related gun violence in Bakersfield and highlighted the impact violence can have at community gathering places, particularly school events.
