A fire burned about 100 vehicles at an auto wrecking yard in Modesto early Sunday, prompting a multiagency response that prevented the flames from spreading to nearby homes and businesses, officials said.
The Modesto Fire Department said crews were dispatched at 3:38 a.m. to the 500 block of Crows Landing Road for a reported vehicle fire. While firefighters were en route, the incident was upgraded to a commercial structure fire.
Firefighters arrived to find an auto wrecking yard with approximately 100 vehicles on fire. Crews focused on protecting nearby mobile homes and neighboring businesses while working to contain the blaze.
The fire was brought under control in about 80 minutes. Officials said no injuries were reported, and no neighboring buildings or mobile homes were damaged.
The response included eight fire engines, three truck companies, three water tenders, three battalion chiefs, the Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit, the Westport Fire District, the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District, the Modesto Police Department, the California Highway Patrol and AMR.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
