The California Highway Patrol made more than 1,300 DUI arrests during its Independence Day holiday enforcement period from July 2 through July 5, the agency reported.

CHP said officers made 1,339 DUI arrests statewide as part of increased enforcement efforts aimed at keeping impaired and dangerous drivers off the roads.

During the holiday period, officers also made 43,250 total enforcement contacts, including 22,983 citations for drivers traveling more than 100 mph and 693 citations for speeding under 100 mph.

“Speed limits exist for a reason,” CHP said. “Slow down, stay alert, and help protect everyone on the road.”
