Two people were injured Tuesday morning after gunfire erupted from another vehicle while they were traveling on Blackstone Avenue in Fresno, police said.

Officers responded around 4:13 a.m. to reports of a shooting near the southwest corner of Blackstone and Nees avenues, according to the Fresno Police Department.

Police said three people were inside a vehicle traveling southbound on Blackstone Avenue when an unknown suspect or suspects fired multiple shots at them.

Investigators later determined the shooting was not random. Police said the victims had been involved in a brief confrontation with the suspects near Palm and Nees avenues before leaving the area eastbound on Nees Avenue.

The suspects were reportedly traveling in two vehicles, described as one black vehicle and one silver vehicle. As the victims drove away, they noticed the silver vehicle following them. After the victims turned south onto Blackstone Avenue, they heard gunfire, police said.

The 25-year-old woman driving the vehicle was not injured.

A 21-year-old man riding in the front passenger seat suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

A 23-year-old man riding in the rear seat suffered gunshot wounds to both legs. He was treated at a hospital and later released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
