Community Media Access Collaborative is now accepting applications for the annual Youth Voices program, a hands-on documentary filmmaking program.

The 10-week program is open to junior high and high school students in the Central Valley and requires no prior experience.

CMAC will provide training throughout every step of the filmmaking process, guiding participants through story development. Students will receive trained support for everything from camera operation to editing in post-production.

This includes direct mentorship from working professionals. Davie Ramirez is returning as a program mentor and will walk students through the process of turning ideas into films.

“Programs like this, and resources at CMAC in general, can help prepare the students with technical skills that they wouldn’t be able to develop otherwise,” Ramirez said. “We try to individualize the experience as much as we can. Apart from working as a group, we make time to work with each student one-on-one to ensure everyone is developing the skill set they’re interested in.”

The program comes at no cost, and CMAC will provide all necessary equipment. Participants will have access to cameras, microphones, and editing software.

Additionally, CMAC will award students a $1,000 stipend upon completion of the program. To sweeten the deal, CMAC will also provide a year-long membership that includes access to gear, training, and support.

The program concludes with a public screening of all student films, allowing the young filmmakers to share their creations with friends, family, and the community.

“We see students start with little to no experience and finish with stories that are personal, powerful, and entirely their own,” said Johnny Pecina, CMAC’s community media manager. “Youth Voices is a reminder of what young people can do when they’re given the space and support to be heard.”

CMAC Youth Voices Timeline

The Youth Voices application window will remain open until May 11, allowing students around six weeks to generate and submit their ideas.

Applicants must submit general information, a topic or story idea, and personal goals and aspirations. Those interested can apply here.

CMAC is hosting a virtual question and answer on Thursday, April 16 for anyone interested in finding out more about the program.

CMAC will announce those chosen to participate on May 20. The program begins on May 29.
