A driver was arrested Thursday night after Chowchilla police found a loaded handgun and approximately 23.6 grams of methamphetamine during a traffic stop.

The stop occurred at about 11 p.m. July 16 after an officer pulled over a vehicle for a vehicle code violation, according to the Chowchilla Police Department.

During the stop, the officer saw a loaded handgun in plain view on the passenger seat. As the investigation continued, officers recovered about 23.6 grams of methamphetamine.

Police said the firearm was not registered to the driver and was not being legally transported.
