One person died and 15 residents were displaced after an apartment fire Wednesday evening in central Fresno, according to the Fresno Fire Department.
Firefighters responded at about 5:50 p.m. to the 2100 block of North First Street after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting an apartment fire and that someone might be trapped inside.
Engine 5 arrived to find an active fire in a unit of a fourplex apartment building. Firefighters determined one occupant had escaped safely, but a second person remained inside. Crews began rescue operations, and a second alarm was requested to bring additional firefighters and resources to the scene.
During an interior search, firefighters found an adult man in the room where the fire started. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
One firefighter suffered minor burn injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The fire spread from the apartment where it began into the building’s shared attic space, damaging all four units and displacing 15 residents.
A total of 63 Fresno Fire Department personnel responded to the incident. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
