SALT LAKE CITY — The editor of Salt Lake magazine has died after she was swept into the ocean in Northern California.
Mary Malouf was visiting Humboldt Bay, located on the coast near the Oregon border. She walked out on the North Jetty with her adult son to watch the waves Monday afternoon, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
They were at the end of the North Jetty wall when a large wave suddenly swept over the wall, knocking them off their feet, deputies said. Her son was able to cling to the rocks but Malouf was swept out to sea.
Her body was found shortly after and she was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Waves in the area were reaching 22 to 28 feet on Tuesday.
Malouf, a 66-year-old Texas native, had served as executive editor of the magazine based in Utah’s capital city since 2007. In a statement, the magazine called her “our north star, undisputed culinary queen, and one of the brightest and funniest people we will ever know.”
