The Fresno Police Department said it received multiple reports of a bear cub sighting near Herndon and West avenues Thursday morning.

Video provided to GV Wire shows the alleged bear running in the street around 8:15 a.m.

Police said California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials responded but called off the search around 9:30 a.m.

They said they would resume the search if additional calls were reported.

Statement from Councilmember Karbassi

“A brown bear is not the usual visitor I have the pleasure of welcoming to District 2 in Northwest Fresno,” Councilmember Mike Karbassi said. “But I am immensely grateful to the California Department of Fish & Wildlife for their incredibly rapid response to the area to ensure the bear returned to a more appropriate habitat without causing any harm to residents or property.”

Karbassi told the public to call the CA Department of Fish & Wildlife at (559) 649-1125 if anyone encounters large wildlife.
