A 27-year-old Fresno man was sentenced Friday to 100 years to life in state prison for fatally shooting his parents at their Fresno home in 2022, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office said.
Julian Charles McElhaney received the sentence Friday from Fresno County Superior Court Commissioner Daniel Brickey following a plea agreement entered Sept. 17.
McElhaney was convicted in the deaths of his father, William McElhaney, 55, and mother, Sylvia McElhaney, 64.
On April 10, 2022, Fresno police responded to a home in the 6100 block of North Tenth Street after receiving reports of gunfire.
Dispatchers subsequently received a call from McElhaney, who reported that he had shot someone, prosecutors said.
When officers arrived, they found William McElhaney dead in the front yard and Sylvia McElhaney dead inside the home. Both had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
McElhaney was detained at the scene and later admitted to shooting and killing his parents following an argument at the family home, according to prosecutors.
During Friday’s sentencing hearing, family members spoke about the lasting impact of the killings.
In a victim impact statement read aloud by the victims’ nephew, Rudy Cruz, the family described the pain and loss caused by the murders.
“The ripple effects of what you did will forever live in the rest of our lives,” Cruz said.
