Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman is increasingly favored to defeat Mayor Karen Bass as ballots continue to be counted, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Raman held 51.1% of the vote compared with Bass’ 49%, leading by more than 16,500 votes as of Wednesday morning. About 37% of the estimated vote remained uncounted.

Election experts told the Times that remaining ballots are expected to favor Raman because later-counted voters tend to be younger and more progressive.

However, the race has not been called, and experts cautioned that hundreds of thousands of ballots remain outstanding.
