Following a sweeping Democratic victory that handed Republicans major losses in both chambers of Congress, the White House issued a pointed reminder Wednesday: President Donald Trump is still in charge.
“PSA: TRUMP IS STILL YOUR PRESIDENT,” read a message posted to the White House’s official social media accounts.
The post featured a photograph of Trump leaning forward over the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, staring directly at the camera. Beneath the image, the White House added a brief caption: “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”
Democrats Flip Congress
The message came less than a day after Democrats won control of the House of Representatives and Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections, ending two years of unified Republican control in Washington.
Democrats flipped at least seven Republican-held Senate seats, including victories in traditionally conservative states such as Texas, Kansas, and South Carolina. The party also made substantial gains in the House, setting up a divided government for the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency.
Although the White House post did not explicitly mention the election results, its timing followed one of the Republican Party’s most significant electoral setbacks ever.
White House communications director Steven Cheung delivered a similar message on X, writing, “Donald J. Trump is the President of the United States. Still your President!”
Trump, meanwhile, sought to distance himself from the Republican losses.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The statement came after weeks of campaigning in which Trump encouraged Republican voters to treat the midterm elections as though he were personally on the ballot.
Trump Congratulated Democrats, Emphasizes Veto Power
Despite the losses, Trump congratulated Democrats during an election-night interview with CBS News and expressed willingness to work with the incoming congressional majority.
However, he also emphasized his presidential veto power, warning that he could reject legislation passed by Democrats.
The Democratic victories will significantly alter the balance of power in Washington when the new Congress convenes Jan. 3, 2027.
With majorities in both chambers, Democrats will gain control of congressional committees, the ability to launch investigations into the Trump administration and greater authority to challenge the president’s legislative priorities.
Trump will retain his executive powers, including the ability to veto legislation. Overriding a presidential veto requires a two-thirds vote in both chambers.
While Tuesday’s election dramatically changed the political landscape in Washington, it did not change who occupies the White House.
And on Wednesday, the administration made a point of reminding Americans of exactly that.
