Americans voting in Tuesday’s midterm elections are deeply dissatisfied with the direction of the country, with economic concerns and views of President Donald Trump weighing heavily on voters, according to early national exit polling by NBC News.
About three-quarters of voters said they were angry or dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States, according to the NBC News Exit Poll.
The economy emerged as the leading concern, with about 4 in 10 voters identifying it as their top issue. Roughly 3 in 10 pointed to democracy.
Voters Want a Check on Trump
The early polling also showed substantial dissatisfaction with Trump. About 6 in 10 voters disapproved of his job performance, while a similar share blamed him at least partly for high prices.
About 7 in 10 voters said they wanted Congress to do more to serve as a check on Trump.
The findings provide an early look at the electorate as voters decide control of Congress in the first midterm election of Trump’s second term.
About Exit Polls
Exit polls are surveys of people who have already voted, including those casting ballots in person as well as early and mail voters. The figures can change throughout election night as additional interviews and election results are incorporated into the survey.
The exit poll is conducted by SSRS for NBC News and several other major news organizations.
Exit polling is intended to help explain who voted and what motivated their decisions. It is not an official vote count and does not determine the winners of individual races.
