The Fresno Police Department will conduct DUI patrols Saturday from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. as officers look for drivers suspected of driving under the influence.
Police reminded the public that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with a person’s ability to drive, and motorists are urged to follow directions for use and read warning labels before getting behind the wheel.
The department also noted that while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.
According to police, drivers arrested and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
The enforcement effort is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
