A fire at an apartment building near Fresno State early Tuesday damaged three units and displaced six adults, according to the Fresno Fire Department.
Firefighters were dispatched shortly after 12:45 a.m. to the 4900 block of North Backer Avenue after multiple callers reported an apartment fire.
The first arriving engine company found smoke and flames coming from a first-floor apartment in a two-story, eight-unit building. Officials said the fire had already spread to the second floor, and because it was unclear whether anyone remained inside, firefighters requested a second alarm and immediately began rescue and fire suppression operations.
Firefighters searched the affected apartments and confirmed no one was trapped inside. Crews then worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further through the building.
Three of the building’s eight apartments were damaged, displacing six adults. A total of 45 firefighters responded to the incident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
